Teacher Classroom Organisation Tips to Get Ready for September

Classroom Organisation

Regardless of what your classroom looks like, there are always ways to make it feel fresher in September, for the new year. Here are some tips to help you with your classroom organisation and getting your classroom ready for September.

One of the best things about being a teacher is the optimism and excitement about a new academic year.

Everything feels fresh and invigorated after the summer break, but sometimes to get September ready, we must update our classrooms and organise and refresh them.

Organising Tables & Chairs

It might sound simple, but you’d be surprised at how important the placement of tables and chairs can be in a classroom.

Each classroom has a different seating arrangement, so setting your tables up how you want can be extremely important. For instance, you could:

  • Sit in each chair within the classroom to see from the child’s point of view. Can they see the board?
  • Can you push your chair backward without banging into furniture?
  • Do you have enough room?
  • Are there any table legs blocking leg space?

These are all really minor yet important factors to consider.

The Equipment Drawers

Having a neat and organised equipment draw is essential. Not only does it make it easier for both yourself and your students to find what they need, but it also makes tidying up a breeze.

Top tip. Make sure that your equipment drawers aren’t located near the children’s table. Having other students clamouring to find tracing paper or a ruler can be a distraction for other kids trying to learn.

Classroom Organisation

Speaking of equipment drawers, you should think about how you will organise the different areas of your classroom. For instance, if you teach primary school kids, how will you organise your trays so that your children can access resources independently?

Make sure you have labels for trays and stickers for personalisation – it makes all the difference.

Exercise Books

As the term progresses, most of the children’s exercise books will become fatter as they get filled.

One mistake many teachers make is the lack of space for the books. You always need more space than you think, especially at the beginning of the year. So make sure that you have plenty of exercise book space and encourage your class to save space where possible.

Stationery

Making sure you have the right stationery for the semester ahead is extremely important. There is nothing worse than using a dried-out ballpoint pen. Preparing your stationery for the semester is essential, from planners, pens, staplers, erasers, and notepads.
