How is COVID Affecting Travel?

Naturally, a global pandemic is bound to cause several issues, especially in relation to travel. Over the last year, the travel sector has been hit hard due to the pandemic, and with the Omicron variant imposing potential travel bans, many question whether travel in 2022 will be affected.

As of January 2022, England has moved into Plan B in response to the Omicron variant. So what does this mean for travel? Many experts imply that travelling abroad this year will go ahead as planned so long as you follow the rules and test negative.

COVID-19 Checklist

There is a checklist you must follow when travelling abroad. Below, we have broken down the travel checklist provided by the Government.

Checklist

  • Check that the country you wish to visit allows people from the UK to enter.
  • You will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test and/or vaccination status.
  • You will be required to arrange a COVID-19 test in any country that you travel to – both as you enter and when exiting.
  • Many countries require proof of vaccination status before you can enter – research this ahead of time and before booking.
  • In many cases, will need to quarantine.
  • Find out how you can use the NHS COVID Pass to prove your vaccination status abroad.
  • Check what measures you need to take when returning to the UK.
  • If you plan on travelling with children, the quarantine regulations may differ. Read more about the rules and quarantine for children

Please note that there are different rules if you have visited a red list country and/or territory. Please check which countries and territories are on the red list. More importantly, read their rules and measures.

Can I Get COVID Travel insurance?

Travel insurance is critical when travelling abroad, especially during a pandemic. However, not all insurance policies are the same, nor do they provide blanket protection – so how do you know which policy is best for you and your family?

You need to ensure that your travel policy includes and covers cancellation. If your tour operator can’t provide the holiday due to lockdowns or restriction changes, having the right policy ensures they will refund any money you have paid for the holiday. However, if you or a family member catches COVID-19 and cannot travel, you won’t be entitled to a refund – similar to other illnesses when travelling.

What Are The Current UK Travel Restrictions?

In January 2022, we are in Plan B, which means there are certain rules and regulations set in place. For the latest updates on travel restrictions, please visit the Government website.

Do I Need To Be Vaccinated To Travel?

The rules for travelling abroad differ depending on your vaccination status. Take a look below at how the rules differ based on your status.

Vaccinated (before you travel to England)

  • You will be required to take a COVID-19 test 2 days before you travel to England.
  • Book and pay for a PCR test to be taken after you arrive in England.
  • Complete the passenger locator form within 48 hours before you arrive in England.

Not Vaccinated (before you travel to England)

  • You will be required to take a COVID-19 test 2 days before you travel to England.
  • Book and pay for 2 days and day 8 COVID-19 PCR tests to be taken upon arrival in England.
  • Complete the passenger locator form within 48 hours before you arrive in England.
  • Quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 full days.

Please note that these steps are for when you return to England – the rules may differ depending on the country you travel to. For an in-depth breakdown of the steps required when returning to the UK, please visit the government website.
